What's happened to the FTP mechanism? I can't find the ftp.php file and neither does it work to enable FTP in the settings localconfig.php anymore? How do you make sure that file permissions are now honoured?

Whether you need SMH or not is now detected by the install.php. Thus, without writing permissions to the localconfig.php, you'll be prompted to enter your FTP data.

But I need it for the tl_files/ area, so that if you create items in that folder, they can be moved/deleted using FTP program, otherwise they end up with www permissions, and you can't edit them in any way using an FTP program. I never used it for install stuff.

The install script just saves the FTP information. This info will be used for any file operation.

The FTP info has been removed from the settings page as it won't change that often and is critical for any installation that requires the SMH. Additionally, with missing / false FTP info, you would not have been able to use the settings page anyway.

I think thyon makes a valid point. In many cases you want to use the SMH even if it is not technically mandatory, so you dont ent up with a mess of files where some are owned by the webserver user and others owned by the ftp user. Maybe a solution would be to ask mandatory for the ftp credentials when localconfig is not writable, and give a checkbox to enter them optionally otherwise.

In my current case I was lucky, the "webserver" was executing the code as the FTP user, so the permissions were set correctly.
